Rihanna launches beauty and stylist agency

140345-rihanna-wallpaper-hd

Rihanna has found love in a hopeless place, survived a rocky relationship with Chris Brown and is now worth more than $90 million according to Forbes. The 27-year-old singer/songwriter has had an impressive career that’s included everything from music to fashion design. Now, Rihanna will be adding a new business venture, Fr8me, which will book makeup artists and stylists for commercials, editorial shoots, ad campaigns and more. Managing partner Benoit Demouy will help Rihanna run the new endeavor. It’s also going to give makeup artists who have gained a loyal following on social media a shot at the big time.

“Our goal is to have a stellar reputation,” Demouy said in an interview on Hollywoodreporter.com. “The industry’s changed so much — rates have gone down, and clients just grab images off social media, trying to bypass paying artists. But we’re concerned with social media, too — we’ll take a makeup artist with 500,000 followers over someone else.”facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Cup of Joe or cup of joy: The Starbucks red cup controversy continues

IMG_2130

I participated in a poll tonight on CNBC.com and it revealed that more than 60 percent of people don’t care about Starbucks’ 2015 red cups. The buzz on the red cups has been brewing since a dude named Josh Feuerstein took to social media to rant about how the cups have removed “Christ” and “Christmas” from its holiday cups.

Here’s a video of Feuerstein fuming about how he tricked Starbucks into saying “Merry Christmas” by telling the barista that was his name and forcing them to write it on the cup. Starbucks employees are allegedly not allowed to wish customers a Merry Christmas.

Now, everyone from Rob Lowe to Donald Trump has tweeted about the infamous holiday cups that Starbucks vice president of Design & Content Jeffrey Fields said in a statement on CNBC.com was meant to include everyone.

“In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs,”  Fields said. “This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories.”

As a Christian and a Starbucks lover, I am personally not offended by these cups. It’s just a red cup. Given the fact that more than 50 million Americans are living in food insecure households, I think we have a lot more problems this holiday season than if a snowman is on a coffee cup.

When Jesus was laying in the manger, I don’t recall any passage in the Bible about a snowman or a red cup. Get over it people.

Let’s start a new Christmas carol, raise a red cup and “Let it go, let it go, let it go.”facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Gwen Stefani has a new man and a new makeup palette this holiday season

01-totalbeauty-logo-gwen-stefani-urban-decayThere’s no doubt Gwen Stefani is a style icon. Now the singer-turned-designer-turned star of “The Voice” has collaborated with Urban Decay to release an eye shadow palette Nov. 22. Stefani worked with Urban Decay’s founder Wendy Zomnir to create the palette which offers 15 shades ranging from neutral nudes to bold blue, gold and green hues. Stores such as Macy’s in Boca Raton will be getting the palette Dec. 1. In addition to the eye shadow palette, USA Today and other news outlets are reporting that Stefani and her co-star from “The Voice” Blake Shelton are dating. I’m excited for Stefani who split from her longtime husband Gavin Rossdale this summer. Hey sometimes, all a girl needs is a new man and some new makeup. If you want this palette, get it fast. It’s predicted to sell out.facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

South Florida Day of the Dead festival delights children of all ages in downtown Fort lauderdale last night

I have always been intrigued with Dia de los Muertos, but I never actually went to an event celebrating it until last night. On Nov. 2, the streets of downtown Fort Lauderdale were flooded with giant skeleton puppets, mariachis, luchadores, women covered in skeleton face paint and rose crowns and many other characters that invoked a double take.

I interviewed the local event’s founder, Jim Hammond, a few weeks ago for South Florida Parenting magazine. I took my 1-year-old son to the event along with my husband and a few friends. It was a truly fun night. My favorite part of the event was the ofrendas exhibit at the New River Inn Museum of History. There were three ofrendas that really caught my eye and as I looked closer, I was shocked to see three familiar names. One of the  ofrendas was created by local stylist Darla Golin and two were tributes to the late great guitarist Dave Shelley and South Florida music scene staple, Lisa “Noodles” Hayden-Gordon, whose death made national headlines.

Lita Ford set to rock Hard Rock Cafe at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Thursday Oct. 29

image010

Rock goddess Lita Ford is always up for supporting a cause close to her heart. The iconic guitar shredder and former Runaway will perform 8 p.m. at  Hard Rock Cafe at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Thursday Oct. 29. Admission is free, however, charitable donations will be accepted with all proceeds benefitting Memorial Hospital Breast Cancer Center in Hollywood, Fla.

Ford’s mother passed away from breast cancer so headling this event for Pinktober is important to the rocker, who has hosted the event in the past. A live and silent auction will also take place to benefit Memorial Hospital Breast Cancer Center. I was fortunate enough to meet Lita twice at Hard Rock events in Hollywood. She was every bit the rock star I hoped she’d be yet she’s totally down to earth and very kind. This is a concert you won’t want to miss.

UB40 to bring Red Red Wine and irie vibes to Broward Center

UB40

By Joanie Cox-Henry

UB40 shot to fame in 1988 when their cover of Neil Diamond’s tune “Red Red Wine” hit No. 1 on the American Billboard charts. Since that iconic single, UB40 went on to sell more than 70 million records globally. Although the original group disbanded in 2008, Ali Campbell, Terence “Astro” Wilson and Mickey Virtue are now back together and on the road again.

“We put out a country album in 2013 and I was wasn’t happy with it. This was the last straw,” Wilson said. “When we started UB40, the whole purpose was to uprise reggae music. This album really stepped away from what we were about.”

The trio then released “Silhouette (The Legendary Voice Of UB40 – Reunited With Astro & Mickey)” in 2014. The cover of the 50’s doowop song originally recorded by The Rays and later Herman’s Hermits, went back to the playful reggae spirit of the band’s roots. “When we choose a cover song to record, they’re typically songs we love and have known forever,” Wilson said. “‘Silhouettes’ was recorded in London and it’s a song we believed the general public would fall in love with as much as we did.”

Although UB40 actually formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England, Wilson said their group and sound really came together organically. “We’re all self-taught,” said Wilson, who also cites the Jackson family, Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley as musical influences. “Gregory Isaacs really inspired us. Everybody established their points and there’s no great mystery to it.”

While UB40 kicked off their tour last November, Wilson is excited to tour North America with the band for the first time in eight years. “I have family in Fort Lauderdale so it’s always a good time when we get to play there,” Wilson said of UB40’s Oct. 24 gig at the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

The group also enjoys performing at various wineries and of course, sipping “Red Red Wine.”

“We performed at winery tours in New Zealand,” Wilson said. “And we’ve become quite versed with wines. We enjoy all sorts of wine, especially pinot noir.”

Although Wilson admits the music industry has “changed beyond all recognition” since he and UB40 cut their first record, the heart of UB40’s music and message remains the same. “Stay true to yourself and do what you do,” Wilson said. “Reggae is more influential now than ever. The baseline of reggae unifies everyone around the globe. Whether you go to Hawaii, Germany or Sicily, reggae is internationally loved. Being with UB40 again has been fantastic. The chemistry is still there and it’s like we’ve never been apart. There’s no ego and no band politics. We’re surrounded by great musicians and we’re doing what we love to do.”

UB40 performs 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 S.W. Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $30-$60. Call 954-462-0222 or visit Browardcenter.org.

Getting Goosebumps with Jack Black and the awesome cast at Four Seasons in Miami

IMG_0981IMG_0984

Meeting Jack Black was something I never imagined would actually happen. Black came to Miami earlier this month with his Goosebumps co-stars Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush and Ryan Lee to promote the film at Four Seasons Miami. Black was wearing a Hawaiian shirt and as cool and laidback in person as I hoped he would be.

While I was a little too old for the Goosebumps series when it came out, I was an avid read of author R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series. I remember trading these books back and forth with my elementary school friend Aimee McPherrin Quigley. These books are such an essential piece of my childhood. It set the foundation for a lifetime of loving suspense and horror plots.

When Black took on the role of Stine, he said he actually met with the author to “get his creative notes and his blessing” before they started filming. facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Candles that will light up your life, not your wallet

IMG_0503

As a real mom on a real budget, I don’t have money to burn on $27 to $70 candles. Yes, candles can cost that much and more. I decided to take Glade’s seasonal candle offerings for a spin. Glade’s Limited Edition Fall Collection offers several options that evoke scents of a simpler time gone by such as Apple Tree Picnic, Fall Antiquing, which is a curious blend of violet, sandalwood and Lilly of the Valley, Hit the Road, which is a musky mandarin scent, Pumpkin Pit Stop, which is a pleasant mix of vanilla, caramel and orchard blossoms and Sunset Walk, an enticing aroma mixed with vanilla, patchouli and roasted chestnut. At just $2.99 for the small candles and $7.49 for the new larger size that burns for 60 hours and is available in the crisp, clean Blue Odyssey scent, these Target and Walmart finds bring a lovely scent to my home and doesn’t put in a dent in my grocery budget. #FeelGladefacebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather
